The language Arts curriculum supports reading, writing, speaking, listening as well as thinking skills with emphasis on the very best examples of children's literature. The program is based on the themes of RELATIONSHIPS, CHANGES and INVESTIGATIONS. These themes are also emphasized in science, mathematics and social studies. In social studies a hands-on geography program will be experienced as well as trade books and role playing, cooperative group work and print/electronic research. Science hands-on experiments and observations are in the areas of weather, plants, liquids/solids and endangered/extinct/threatened animals. Technology supports the 2nd grade program. In addition, students learn through INVESTIGATING with hands-on materials in mathematics. The progress reporting system will indicate student academic growth toward standards. Water safety will include swimming instruction for all 2nd graders.
