The language arts program in first grade continues the guided reading instructional format. This occurs in small groups, accompanied by independent reading, shared reading with best examples of children's literature and varied experiences for writing informational and narrative pieces. Students are encouraged to write using the organization of a good begining, middle and end. Students read through a continuum of leveled books. The first graders also use hands-on problem-solving math investigations. The curriculum is organized around the themes of PATTERNS, EXPLORATIONS and CONNECTIONS. The science units emphasize patterns, lights and shadows, movement/living things and embryology and plants. Social studies programs also incorporate hands-on student discoveries. A progress reporting system (report card) will be used to show the progress students are making towards standards established for first graders.
